Professor in real estate and land use law (tenure track)
The
Department of Built Environment at Aalto University is a community of approximately 200 employees where research, teaching, creation, and development of solutions for societal needs take place. Our main research areas include real estate economics, land use planning, transportation engineering, geoinformatics, and water and environmental engineering. We work in strong collaboration with industry companies and public entities, creating a lasting impact on the economy and society.
We are now seeking a professor for the
Real Estate Research Group. The research group conducts interdisciplinary and multimethod research on real estate markets and the institutions that govern them. We study, for example, the role of public and private actors in urban development, market dynamics and real estate management, covering the entire lifecycle of real estate.
The professorship broadly focuses on the regulation of the real estate sector, including private and public law aspects, and EU legislation affecting land use law. This encompasses ownership, land and water rights, public and private legal restrictions on land use, legislation on land use change permits, transfer and registration of real estate ownership and management rights, aspects of real estate business, and regulation concerning real estate development (especially land use planning and land policy). The call is open for Assistant, Associate and Full Professor levels of the
Aalto University tenure track system.
Your role
We are looking for a candidate with
comprehensive legal expertise in the area of real estate and land use law, and additionally, specialized legal knowledge on a specific theme within this area. The ideal candidate has a passionate interest in the subject matter of the professorship, a desire to find solutions as part of an interdisciplinary research community, and a readiness to collaborate with key stakeholders.
In this role, you will:
Lead legal research in real estate and land use by building your own team and securing competitive funding.
Produce high-quality legal research that is published in esteemed peer-reviewed journals.
Deliver high-level teaching in real estate and land use law.
Inspire students and impart them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that help them succeed.
Benefit society through the impactful work you do.
Support the activities of the Department of Built Environment and the School of Engineering within the framework of the tenure track professorship.
Our expectations
The position requires a doctorate relevant to the field. The candidate should have deep legal expertise in Finnish real estate and land use law, as well as knowledge of related legislation, or the capability to acquire this expertise. The ability to teach and communicate in both national languages is considered an advantage. Experience in directly supporting legislative preparation or otherwise impacting decision-making through research results, as well as working with key stakeholders on research projects or studies, is also considered an advantage.
Additionally, we seek a passionate educator, and we cannot emphasize enough the importance of teaching and learning in this field. In teaching, the candidate is expected to:
Teach courses in real estate and land use law within our study programs, with a typical teaching load of two to three courses per year.
Supervise bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students.
Develop their teaching skills and competencies throughout their career.
Participate in curriculum development and pedagogical leadership.
Engage with Aalto University's Life-Wide Learning offerings.

About recruitment process
Only applications submitted through Workday will be considered. We will start the evaluation process in January 2026 after the application period has expired. From the applicants in the first phase, the departmental committee will select candidates to continue in the process. Aalto University will use external reviewers to support the evaluation of applicants during the recruitment process. Shortlisted applicants are invited for a site visit. A site visit includes a teaching demonstration and an interview. Site visits will be held in March-April 2026, tentatively either 20.3., 19.3., or 23.4.2026.
