The Faculty of Law at Western University in London, Ontario invites applications for a full-time faculty member with research and teaching interests in Indigenous Law. Candidates may also have complementary research interests in areas such as Aboriginal Law, constitutional law, property law, environmental law, international law, dispute resolution, or human rights.

The Appointment may be a probationary (tenure-track) appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, depending on qualifications and experience. Candidates may also be considered for Limited Term appointment, with rank to be determined by qualifications and experience.

Qualified applicants must have a JD, LLB, or equivalent degree, as well as a relevant advanced graduate degree or equivalent experience. Western Law welcomes candidates with degrees or research expertise in Law or other related fields, including Political Science, Sociology, History, Anthropology, or Geography. Applicants are encouraged to describe their connections to or partnerships with Indigenous communities and organizations, where applicable.

The appointment is expected to commence July 1, 2022, although alternative starting dates may be arranged.

Western is committed to increasing Indigenous voices and presence across all levels of work, study, and research. As outlined in its 2016 Indigenous Strategic Plan, this includes a commitment to building a community of Indigenous scholars across its Faculties, promoting Indigenous methodologies, and building collaborative and community-engaged partnerships. This work is supported by the University’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives, the Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Indigenous Initiatives), the Indigenous Student Centre, and the Indigenous Postsecondary Education Council.

The Faculty of Law is also strongly committed to enhancing the participation of Indigenous law students and lawyers, and to teaching all our students about Indigenous legal orders and the experience of Indigenous peoples and cultures within Canada. Our JD students are required to take a mandatory course in Indigenous Law. We are regular participants in the Debwewin Summer Law Internship, the Kawaskimhon Talking Circle, and the National Advocates for Indigenous Law Students, and we have partnered with Deshkaan Ziibiing (Chippewas of the Thames) First Nation and Walpole Island First Nation on the Bkejwanong territory in hosting Indigenous Law Camps. To complement and enhance these initiatives, we seek to enrich our academic research and programming in Indigenous Law.

In addition to this faculty appointment, we intend to grow our research capacity in Indigenous Law through the creation of a new fellowship program, and to support our Indigenous law students and programming through the appointment of an Indigenous programs coordinator.

  • a cover letter identifying their areas of interest in research and teaching, and their experience with and commitment to institutional service;
  • a detailed curriculum vitae;
  • copies of transcripts for any degrees obtained since 2015;
  • a research agenda (discussing prior and prospective research) of no more than five pages;
  • a teaching statement (discussing teaching philosophy, teaching interests, and teaching experience (if applicable)) of approximately two to three pages; and
  • two sample publications (or other writing samples, such as a dissertation chapter).
