Working for the Department/Faculty

Founded in 1912 the Faculty of Law is the oldest law school in Western Canada and located on Treaty 6 territory, traditional lands of First Nations and Métis people. It is situated on the North Campus of the University of Alberta, in Alberta's capital city, a metropolitan center of 1.3 million people. Members of the Faculty of Law are recognized nationally and internationally as leading scholars and teachers, and lead by example in their service to the university, legal and civic communities. The Faculty enrolls approximately 525 JD students and operates a robust graduate program. Alumni include the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, leading judges, academics and lawyers.

The Faculty of Law is also home to four research groups that contribute research, ideas, innovation and policy expertise to important areas of public concern: the Wahkohtowin Law & Governance Lodge, the Health Law Institute, the Centre for Constitutional Studies, and the Alberta Law Reform Institute. Additionally, we employ a full-time Indigenous Support Officer to support our Indigenous students and we have a vibrant Indigenous Law Students Association.

The University of Alberta is home to more than 1,300 Indigenous students from across Canada and is centrally located in the City of Edmonton, which has the second largest Indigenous population of any Canadian city.


Situated on Treaty 6 territory, the traditional lands of First Nations and Métis peoples, the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor with a focus on Indigenous Law. The Faculty will also consider applications for appointment at a higher rank in appropriate circumstances.

The successful candidate will have a record of research centered on Indigenous legal issues, Indigenous laws, or Indigenous perspectives on public or private law. The Faculty of Law is committed to offering a supportive environment for emerging and established scholars and embraces a broad range of theoretical and methodological approaches.


The successful candidate must have the ability to conduct both independent and cooperative research, develop viable and productive research programs, and to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in a related discipline. Successful candidates will also be expected to make substantive contributions through service to the Faculty, the University, and/or to the broader community. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will demonstrate potential for excellence in scholarly research and teaching, and possess an exceptional record of academic achievement and/or strong, proven and ongoing relationships with Indigenous peoples.
Ordinarily, a JD (LLB) or equivalent and a doctorate in law or cognate discipline, completed or in progress, is required.
Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered in exceptional circumstances.
Preference will be given to qualified candidates who are First Nations, Métis or Inuit.
