Assistant Professor, Tenure Track Position (Position Number: 30863) Winnipeg, University of Manitoba

The Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time tenure-track or tenured position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor for the Mauro Chair in Human Rights and Social Justice in the Master of Human Rights (MHR) program. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Mauro Chair in Human Rights and Social Justice will play a key role in building the MHR. The appointment will commence on January 1, 2022 or as soon thereafter as possible.

The MHR program helps students address human rights challenges of the 21st century. While in the Faculty of Law, the MHR is an interdisciplinary program involving three other faculties (Social Work, Arts, Education) and three centres (Centre for Human Rights Research, Mauro Institute for Peace and Justice, and National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation). The program emphasizes critical engagement with the conception, practice and institutionalization of human rights.

This position is supported by an endowment from the Mauro Family Foundation. The chair is renewable after five years. The University is a leading centre of excellence for human rights education and research.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on emerging human rights and social justice issues, contributing to knowledge and scholarship in the area.
  • Teach in the MHR core credit courses and elective courses and create new MHR elective courses/programs/opportunities across a variety of fora.
  • Work with the MHR director to shape/implement the program.
  • Supervise and advise graduate students’ research principally in the MHR.
  • Oversee student practicums with local, national and international organizations, allowing students to gain practical experience in human rights and social justice while providing valuable service to the host agencies.
  • Assist with the organization and delivery of professional seminars intended to provide grounding in the practical skills, knowledge and ethics required to undertake human rights work.
  • Collaborate with the university’s social justice degree programs (Peace and Conflict Studies, Disability Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, etc.) and with organizations that support human rights/social justice.
  • Participate in faculty/university service responsibilities.
    Qualifications
    Applicants will:
  • have completed/neared completion (ABD) of a PhD in a relevant human rights and social justice area (including but not limited to human rights programs, law, sociology, politics, justice studies, social work or rights related fields);
  • be able to teach in the MHR; and
  • have a demonstrated profile or potential in human rights and social justice research.
    The candidate will:
  • have expertise in human rights and social justice theory and practice;
  • have or be capable of developing capacity in teaching human rights research methods (both qualitative and quantitative);
  • be familiar with international, regional, national, provincial and local human rights systems and enforcement mechanisms;
  • have worked as a scholar, teacher or practitioner in the field of human rights or social justice (including universities and/or agencies);
  • have experience or the potential to be actively involved in international, regional, national, provincial or local human rights networks and advocacy;
  • have potential or an existing record of high-quality publications in innovative, multidisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary research related to human rights or social justice;
  • be a collaborative team player and strong collaborator;
  • have potential or demonstrated ability to engage students from a variety of disciplines, as well as the public, in critical debate and action on human rights and social justice issues; and
  • engage in public-facing human rights and social justice education and discussion.
    Experience in governmental, inter-governmental and/or non-governmental human rights organizations will be an asset.
