Primary Function
The dean is the chief administrative officer of the college and reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost for aspects of the operation of the college, including its instructional, research and scholarly activities, outreach, engagement, and public-service mission. In carrying out responsibilities, the dean respects faculty governance, consults advisory bodies within the college, and follows the policies and procedures of the college and the university. The dean is the senior administrative representative of the college in interacting with internal and external stakeholders. This is a 12-month, full-time Supportive Professional Staff with faculty rank position, if appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)
1. Provide leadership in establishing appropriate mission, goals, and short-term and long-term plans for the college that support the university’s mission.
2. Recruit, assign workload, and supervise college directors, associate/assistant deans, other administrators, and staff to support the needs of the college and its units.
3. Demonstrate commitment to recruiting and retaining diverse faculty and staff who meet the needs of academic and support units of the college.
4. Provide leadership in recruiting and retaining a diverse student body and providing them with the best educational opportunities possible.
5. Promote excellence in teaching, research and scholarly activities, engagement, service and outreach among faculty and staff that meet the mission of the college and the university.
6. Recommend tenure, promotion and sabbatical leaves of appropriate classifications of employees by adhering to college and university policies and procedures.
7. Evaluate employees and recommend personnel actions such as reappointment, merit assignment, progressive discipline, remediation and discharge or termination according to university policies and procedures.
8. Provide leadership in educational program development, accreditation, assessment, review, revision and/or deletion consistent with the mission of the college and the university.
9. Seek, manage and allocate resources (including space) reasonably to academic and support units of the college to meet their goals and priorities and that of the college.
10. Manage effective communication among students, faculty, directors, associate/assistant deans, and other personnel within the college.
11. Develop, lead and encourage fundraising in support of the college’s goals and the goals of its departments, programs and initiatives by working collaboratively with the Division of University Advancement and internal and external stakeholders.
12. Serve as the spokesperson for the college and communicate effectively with various constituencies within the university, and with alumni, donors, external partners, and other stakeholders.
13. Provide for professional development of faculty and staff, maintain an active professional development program, and participate in professional societies relevant to the position.
14. Chair faculty meetings of the college and participate in the Council of Deans and other committees within the university.
15. Handle other duties relevant to the position as assigned by the Provost.

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position
-The successful candidate must possess a J.D. degree or equivalent.

-The candidate will possess the collaborative leadership skills necessary to continue the College of Law’s commitment to scholarship and outstanding, student-centered legal education.

-The candidate will possess the skills necessary to develop and enhance the College of Law’s relationships with alumni, the legal profession, the academy, and the larger public it serves.

-The candidate will possess the ability to fundraise, develop initiatives, and enhance the reputation of the College of Law.

-Possess qualifications appropriate to a tenured full law professor in the College of Law.

Education and Experience Preferred
-Prior academic administrative experience.
